Our Founder and Director

Junia Howell, Ph.D.

Cincinnati, Ohio

Junia was formally trained as an urban sociologist and race scholar. Her academic research identifying how housing and disaster relief policies uphold White supremacy has been widely cited in news media, legislative hearings, and federal and local bills.

Recognizing that research on problems rarely results in actionable solutions, Junia founded eruka to address the issues she’s spent over a decade investigating.

Junia is eruka’s Director and holds a faculty position at the University of Illinois Chicago. She previously was a professor at the University of Pittsburgh and received her Ph.D. from Rice University.
